  • This book breaks new ground in the history of anthropology, opening up an explicit examination of anthropology in the Cold War era. With historical distance, Cold War anthropology has begun to emerge as a distinct field within the discipline. This book brings a number of different approaches to bear on the questions raised by anthropology's Cold War history. The contributors show how anthropologists became both tools and victims of the Cold War state during the rise of the United States in the post-War period. Examining the intersection between science and power, this book is a compelling read for anthropologists, historians, sociologists, and anyone interested in the way in which colonial and neo-colonial knowledge is produced and constructed.

  • The Allied agreement after the Second World War did not only partition Germany, it divided the nation along the fault-lines of a new bipolar world order. This inner border made Germany a unique place to experience the Cold War, and the "German question" in this post-1945 variant remained inextricably entwined with the vicissitudes of the Cold War until its end. This volume explores how social and cultural practices in both German states between 1949 and 1989 were shaped by the existence of this inner border, putting them on opposing sides of the ideological divide between the Western and Eastern blocs, as well as stabilizing relations between them. This volume's interdisciplinary approach addresses important intersections between history, politics, and culture, offering an important new appraisal of the German experiences of the Cold War.

  • Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject History Europe - Germany - Postwar Period, Cold War, grade: A, Colby College (-), language: English, abstract: From the power vacuum in the wake of World War II stepped two new superpowers and a new world order of bipolarity. The war destroyed Europe, once a force on the international stage. The United States and the Soviet Union were left to compete against each other in all forms and arenas for sole dominance. Their decades-long struggle was nowhere more apparent than in the United Nations (UN). This international organization, designed to promote peace and provide a forum for state cooperation, became anything but, as the two superpowers vied in an all out struggle of power politics until the end of the Cold War. A prime example, and perhaps, as Dag Hammarskjöld, the UN Secretary-General from 1953 to 1961, argued, the most important UN peacekeeping operation of the Cold War was the UN intervention in the Congo, Organisation des Nations Unies au Congo (ONUC), that began in 1960. The Congolese crisis demonstrated that the Cold War cleavage was powerful enough to penetrate even the very international organization created to eliminate the influence of individual state interests; the clear East-West divide not only further escalated the internal Congolese conflict but also further strained US and Soviet relations in all aspects of the UN.

  • The Cold War had seemed like a permanent fixture in global politics, and until its denouement, no Western or Soviet politician foresaw that the stand-off between the two superpowers - after decades of struggle over every aspect of security, politics, economics and ideas - would end in their lifetimes. Even after March 1985 when Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union it was not preordained that global nuclear Armageddon could or would be averted peaceably. But just four years later, the Berlin Wall was dismantled and perestroika spread throughout the former Soviet bloc. It was a sea change in world history, which resulted in the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Drawing on pioneering archival research, Robert Services gripping new investigation of the final years of the Cold War pinpoints the astonishing relationships among President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, Secretary of State George Shultz and the USSRs last Foreign Affairs Minister, Eduard Shevardnadze, who found a way to cooperate during times of extraordinary change around the world. The story is of American pressure and Soviet long-term decline and over-stretch. The End of the Cold War shows how that small, skillful group of statesmen were determined to end the Cold War on their watch. In the process, they irreversibly transformed the global geopolitical landscape. Authoritative, compelling and meticulously researched, this is political history at its best.

  • Exploring the visions of the end of the Cold War that have been put forth since its inception until its actual ending, this volume brings to the fore the reflections, programmes, and strategies that were intended to call into question the bipolar system and replace it with alternative approaches or concepts. These visions were associated not only with prominent individuals, organized groups and civil societies, but were also connected to specific historical processes or events. They ranged from actual, thoroughly conceived programmes, to more blurred, utopian aspirations - or simply the belief that the Cold War had already, in effect, come to an end. Such visions reveal much about the contexts in which they were developed and shed light on crucial moments and phases of the Cold War.

  • This historical fiction, the second in the multivolume saga, is a matriarch's remembrance of three generations during America's rise to power in the oil world and on the world stage. From the end of The Great War through the beginning of The Cold War, with an unforgettable adventure into the heart of World War II, this story visits Paris, Roaring 20s Chicago, oil boom Oklahoma, pre-war Arabia, wartime Europe and Cold War Iran. With lean, muscular prose, and relentless storytelling, Trabish makes "OIL IN THEIR BLOOD: The American Decades" another fascination of fact, adventure, romance and melodrama, as he again drills for metaphysical and stark cold truths about love, family, war, oil and America's addiction to it.

  • The Cold War has spawned almost as many books as Hot Love. This one has clarity. Mr. Donnelly, the Labour M.P. for Pembroke, England has attempted to trace the degree of frigidity to its source. To his credit, he tells it as a story. People, nations, the immutables of geographic/strategic position are the major actors in a book that could have bogged down in footnotes. An unfriendly Russia has been on the psychological defensive since Peter the Great toured the western countries and brought back technology as his souvenir. With journalistic skill, the author brings Cold War progress up to the current new regime. He is especially good at unsnarling and discussing the many strands of the Red Chinese tangle and its effect on total Russian policy. An English view, but importable.Издательство: St. Martins Press

  • The thesis of this book, by a leading British student of the Communist movement, is that the Sino-Soviet dispute is profound in origin and definitely here to stay. When the author deals with clearly factual material, such as the two conferences at Bucharest and Moscow in 1960 at which the breach between the Communist parties of the Soviet Union and China widened, the account is quite interesting.Издательство: Penguin Books

  • This book was originally conceived to provide a comprehensive survey of the numerous underground nuclear Monitoring Posts in and around South Yorkshire during the period known as the "Cold War" (1946 to 1991). These sites were operated by the voluntary body of men and women of the Royal Observer Corps; whose origins date prior to World War 2 (WW2), and who occupied these Posts to provide a secretive warning and monitoring role in the event of a nuclear attack on the United Kingdom during the "Cold War". As the initial research to this book progressed; other protected sites were identified and were considered to be just as significant to the "Cold War" period and ultimately required inclusion.

  • Shelter drills, discussions at school, media exposure, all served to embed the idea of threat to our very existence deep in conscious and subconscious thought. In this book the worldwide events that took place during the Cold War are explored through the lens of everyday life. The stories presented in Time Held Hostage, Cold War Casualties and Other Atomic Age Stories are reflections on the effect of a threat and anxiety experienced by a generation.

  • The Cold War was not only about the imperial ambitions of the super powers, their military strategies, and antagonistic ideologies. It was also about conflicting worldviews and their correlates in the daily life of the societies involved. The term "Cold War Culture" is often used in a broad sense to describe media influences, social practices, and symbolic representations as they shape, and are shaped by, international relations. Yet, it remains in question whether - or to what extent - the Cold War Culture model can be applied to European societies, both in the East and the West. While every European country had to adapt to the constraints imposed by the Cold War, individual development was affected by specific conditions as detailed in these chapters. This volume offers an important contribution to the international debate on this issue of the Cold War impact on everyday life by providing a better understanding of its history and legacy in Eastern and Western Europe.
